History of Domaine de La Roussille

Domaine de la Roussille, which has been in existence for over 30 years, is located in Neuville de Poitou, near Poitiers, not far from the Futuroscope (just 15 minutes away).

Founded in 1995, the estate's history began with Laurent Girault who, although winegrowers from father to son, set up 4 hectares of vines outside the family framework. They were soon joined by Anne, who gradually increased the size of the estate while selling their produce at local markets. They also began growing table grapes, becoming pioneers in the region. Already concerned about the environmental impact of their work, they have introduced a number of measures, including reducing the dose of fertiliser used and partially grassing over the vines.

In 2010, they built a storage cellar and a tasting room, enabling them to sell their products directly, which now benefit from the Val de Loire PGI designation. In 2018, their three children, Flavian, Lohan and Lorian, joined them in succession. Today, the estate has around fifty hectares of vines, mostly in clay-limestone soil, spread across the communes of Neuville, Cissé and Charrais.

At the same time, the table grape business is continuing to develop its avant-garde approach. First by gradually expanding over the years with new classic and original varieties, then more recently with resistant varieties that require virtually no treatment (depending on the weather). This activity is now run by two of the sons.

Still developing since its beginnings, the estate is now seeking to diversify its production while evolving its growing practices towards more sustainable and reasoned models in line with its long-held vision, through, for example, the introduction of Precision Pruning or the gradual arrival of new disease-resistant grape varieties.

History of the Poitou vineyards

Vineyards in Poitou: a thousand-year-old tradition

Traces of vineyards in the region date back to Gallo-Roman times. As a result, the vineyards have existed for at least twenty centuries. It was between the 10th and 12th centuries that it acquired its greatest renown. The wines of Poitou were highly sought after by the nobles of the time. In the 13th century, the vineyards were at their peak, with a vast area of land bought up by many of the region's bourgeoisie to grow vines.

Challenges and renaissance: from devastation to renewal

Unfortunately, the vineyards were devastated on several occasions, firstly during the Wars of Religion. Then, in the second half of the 19th century, phylloxera struck, destroying the entire Poitou vineyard (43,000 hectares) and triggering the rural exodus. In 1945, winegrowers got together to create a winegrowers' union to defend the Haut-Poitou appellation, VDQS (Vins Délimités de Qualité Supérieure). From 1971 to 1985, the growth and reputation of Haut-Poitou VDQS wines increased considerably, enabling the vineyard to continue its development.

The Haut-Poitou vineyards today

Today, only a handful of independent winegrowers, such as Domaine de la Roussille, sell direct, out of the remaining forty or so in the region. These others sell their production to the various wine merchants in the Loire Valley. Today, there are around 500 hectares of vines in the Poitou region, 400 of which are classified as "IGP Vin de Pays du Val de Loire", with the remaining hundred or so as AOP Haut-Poitou.

Val de Loire PGI wines

Our wines have the Val de Loire Protected Geographical Indication.
The Protected Geographical Indication is a European label guaranteeing the quality and origin of a wine. It covers the entire Loire Valley.
